“Joy of discovery, tight ensemble playing, technical virtuosity and interpretively lucid music making: the American ensemble demonstrated masterful creative will.” Göttinger Tageblatt (Germany)

In the peace that followed the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War, a new generation of German composers redefined their own music, imbuing it with what became a distinctively German identity. Pachelbel is possibly the best known today from this generation of musicians, who in turn became the teachers of the Bach’s, Handel’s and Telemann’s who’d overshadow them in history. But looking back, that post-war generation’s music reveals itself as something so ravishing as to make us wonder why we’re only hearing them now. Vocalists Laura Heimes, Jennifer Lane, Aaron Sheehan and David Newman join the Tempesta di Mare Chamber Players for Art of the Prophets, vocal and instrumental music from the generation before J. S. Bach. The program includes stunning works by Johann Christoph Bach, Bruhns, Rosenmüller, Erlebach and Pez.

Pre-concert talk by Prof. Tanya Kevorkian, Millersville University, on the reemergence of music and celebration in German society after the Thirty Years War.

PROGRAM:
“Jauchzet dem Herren” — Nicholaus Bruhns
Ouverture III in C — Phillip Heinrich Erlebach
“O dives omnium bonarum dapum” — Johann Rosenmüller
Concerto Pastorale — Christoph Pez
“Meine Freundin, du bist schön” — Johann Christoph Bach

The performances of this program are supported by an Art Works grant through the National Endowment for the Arts
