Tempesta di Mare’s Greater Philadelphia Concert Series
resumes for its fourth season with the first installment of The
Grand Orchestra, a new three-part series that uses an expanded
ensemble to explore the sounds that the newer, more powerful orchestras
of the eighteenth century inspired in composers from Corelli to
Haydn. The series opens with Italy and France, where competing
national styles redefined baroque music, and features music by
Charpentier, Corelli, Leclair, Vivaldi and Veracini. October 14th
at Lang Concert Hall in Swarthmore and October 15th at St. Mark’s
Church in Center City. This is an “Open Doors” free-admission
concert. For further information, contact Tempesta di Mare at
tempestadimare.org or call 215-755-8776.
Tempesta’s “off-the-grid chic” doesn’t
come from just the quality of its performances, which The CityPaper
describes as “a zest and virtuosity that transcends issues
of style and instrumentation.” It’s also a tribute
to the group’s successful efforts at drawing entirely new
faces to public performances of classical music.
Tempesta di Mare’s “Open Doors” free-admission
concerts, which comprise half of the Greater Philadelphia Concert
Series in the current season, were created as a risk-free introduction
to the pleasures of attending public performances of classical
music. The goal of the program is to increase interest in attending
live classical music concerts. According to survey results, about
14% of Tempesta di Mare’s audience was attending its first
live classical music concert at an Open Doors event. Most of these
respondents indicated that they would attend more classical music
concerts, whether ticketed or free-admission. Support for the
Open Doors concerts comes largely from voluntary audience contributions.
