Navigable rivers have helped societies flourish for as long as people have known how to make boats. From early modern America to today, people, goods and ideas sailed to and from far-away continents, over the Atlantic, through the Delaware Bay, docking at or departing from Philadelphia and beyond. Back across the Atlantic, the waters of the Elbe flow past such great German cities as Telemann’s home city of Hamburg and Dresden—the center of baroque Europe’s most lavish musical establishments including the famed Hofkapelle orchestra at the court of Friedrich August II.
River Music celebrates all things water: playful water nymphs, the rising and falling tides, merry boat people and the god Neptune in love (Telemann), and four singers personifying the four rivers of Saxony to sing Elector Friedrich August’s praises in a festive and bubbly birthday romp (Bach).
An all-star cast of vocal soloists joins the Tempesta di Mare baroque orchestra, replete with trumpets and timpani, for this celebration and performance.
