Musical Connections between Classical-era haiti and philadelphia

A collaboration with Baritone and researcher Jean Bernard Cerin, DMA and Tempesta cellist and musicologist Eve Miller.

In a recent Tempesta Talk Cerin and Miller discuss their research on music, musicians and dancers from classical-era St. Domingue, that made their way to Philadelphia in the 18th century. They also drew parallels to similar flows of people and culture from Haiti to Philadelphia in the Philadelphia music scene today.

Dr. Cerin also introduced audiences to his ongoing humanities initiative, the Lisette Project, tracing the sung history of the oldest Haitian Creole text, “Lisette quitté la plaine.” Part of the ongoing project are recordings of the song which Cerin made alongside Tempesta di Mare musicians Richard Stone, lute, Eve Miller, cello, and oboists, Debra Nagy.
